Daily reflections for one year. Each day consists of a brief
reading, a sacred verse, a suggested action or focus for the day,
and a subject for prayer, advocacy, or appreciation. The author
draws on literature, history, Scripture, human experiences and
emotions, music, art, poetry, etc. Interfaith sacred texts are
used.
By reading the Gospel of John as a mystical text and hearing the
words of Jesus as mystical language we discover an ancient
spirituality that is consistent with modern science and helpful for
interfaith dialogue. In John's Gospel Jesus escapes capture ten
times and corrects literal reception of his language eleven times.
These patterns along with John's emphasis on the inner Presence and
the divine desire for Oneness show a mystical approach to faith.
Embracing Jesus' mystical, metaphorical language enables one to
develop a 'mystical mindset' for living in the 21st century. The
perception of separateness from God and one another is corrected by
this fresh reading of John's Gospel along with the mystics of the
Christian tradition as well as other spiritual traditions.
Have you ever had trouble getting along with someone? Does religion
seem like a meaningless routine? Have you ever questioned the
purpose of life? Author Wayne McLaughlin has talked with people
about these questions for thirty-six years. In reflections given to
an Ohio congregation, Wayne wrestles with deep questions with
honestly and candor. With approachable theology and humor Pastor
McLaughlin gives his guidelines for hopeful living based on his
years of studying the Bible and his own experiences with many
people on the journey of faith.
